Gmail and Sift Lounge Fixed

It finally reached our attention that siftbot's emails sent to Gmail addresses haven't been reaching their destination for a while! Google required that a change be made, and that's done so emails should be back in normal working order for @ mentions and similar activity-based notifications.

Apologies for anyone and everyone who has been hollering in comments at others but getting no response. 😢 (@eric3579, @ant, @newtboy, and everyone else)

In addition, I noticed that Sift Lounge has been broken, in that you could kind of load the page but never post any messages.

Just in case anyone decides to pop in, this has been fixed. And it now supports the modern emoji short tags as well. 👍

I'll probably be hanging out regularly now that it's working again, hoping to see other Sifters jumping back in there as well!

Happy 15th Birthday, VideoSift!

Hard to believe it's been 15 years since @dag kicked off this whole VideoSift project.

We've come a long way, had some ups and some downs, and we're all much older and grayer than when we started, but I for one am happy that we're still here together, alive and kicking.

Happy birthday to PC World's Best Video Aggregator of 2007!

Emoji Shortcodes Now Available

As mentioned here, I thought it'd be great to support Slack-style emoji shortcodes.

This has been implemented and is now available.

Just use a colon followed by a shortcode followed by another colon, for example: 👍

As @newtboy requested, there is a 🤦 emoji and thousands of others, and as @ant requested, they are rendered as simple standard emoji characters.

If you hover over an emoji, you'll see the shortcode text that was used to create it.

The full list of emojis is available on the following page. Click the emojis you want and then copy them all to your clipboard by clicking the 📋 in the bottom-right corner, then just paste away!

Happy 12th Siftiversary

Well, @dag... @siftbot... We've made it to a dozen years. Congratulations to us!

Internet culture has changed in the past dozen years, but it's nice to see that no matter how much things around us may change, the people of the Sift are as awesome as they ever were.

You. Complete. We.

Some Long Overdue Fixes

Two oustanding issues are finally fixed! Both of them are related to SSL, though in different ways.

Internal VideoSift Widget Embeds

Our own embeds in comments on the site have been broken since we enabled SSL because the old widgets had insecure URLs hard-coded and insecure scripts cannot be loaded on a secure page. Those issues are fixed. For example:

The Bookmarklet (that allows you to post videos by clicking a button in your bookmark bar) never worked when you were looking at a video on a secure video host URL (e.g., YouTube) because VS was not secure, so for the same reason listed above, our insecure bookmarklet script just wouldn't load.

Now that we support SSL, I've updated the bookmarklet to use only secure URLs so it will now work from a video host using SSL or not.

*Ban and *Spammer Guidelines

Like everyone who's been a Sifter for a while (or even 11 years, like some of us!), one of the things we appreciate most is that the community takes care of the community, including welcoming new members and more often telling likely spammers and abusers to take a hike.

The two most frequent practices used in dealing with potential baddies is the *ban invocation and the *spammer invocation. These are very powerful invocations and must be used with great responsibility. Until now, their use has gone mostly unchecked, taking every invocation in good faith.

YouTube Previewing Videos on Hover?

I just discovered by accident that when you hover your mouse over YouTube embeds they're apparently now stepping through thumbnails from the video so you can preview pieces of the thing before you ever actually click it!

That's a wonderful development. Has anyone else seen this or heard an announcement about this? Is this common knowledge?

SSL Now Enforced Site-Wide

We are now secure! Any page requests for will now be redirected to

It took a lot of effort to go through as many of our templates as I could find where http:// was hard-coded into a URL and fix those, but there may still be some outstanding. If there is any such insecure content embedded on the page it will generate a "mixed-content" warning in your browser's console and the "Secure" padlock in your browser will look broken (or something). Also, you may also be able to identify non-secure images and embeds (like videos) because they will fail to load.

Nordic Channel: Yay or Nay?

  (0 votes)

A total of 13 votes have been cast on this poll.

Member @Zawash has proposed creation of a new *Nordic channel as described below. Vote whether you think it should or should not be allowed:

The Nordic countries - Scandinavia (Norway, Sweden, Denmark), Finland and Iceland, as well as regions controlled by nordic countries (Greenland, the Faroe Islands).

This is for sifts related to *nordic people, culture, language, cuisine or otherwise. Bork, bork bork. Lutefisk.

5,000 Facebook Likes

We finally just broke through the 5K barrier in likes of our Facebook page!

Our numbers stalled for a very long time (like years) because the Like button was removed from the page header in a redesign way back when. Since we put it back up there, the numbers have increased slowly, but semi-steadily, and we finally reached this new milestone.

Nothing huge, but a "huzzah!" that we finally got there. Let's all pat siftbot on the back (but be careful; he bites!).

Comment Star and Queue Slot Adjustments

We've just increased the number of available video submission queue slots for non-charters to 5 slots and for charters to 7 slots.

We've also lowered the number of comment upvotes to 10 (from 15) to earn a comment star.

Thanks to @eric3579 for the suggestions!

Where People Click on Video Posts

Was just inspecting the hottest spots are on the new homepage and found it interesting/humorous to see where people tend to click, surely subconsciously. See the screenshot below.

People tend to click right where Key's and Peele's faces meet for their kiss in the thumbnail. In the title of that post, "Peele" and "Bloopers" are where clicks tend to go.

On the "hot chick" post the girl's posterior is highly targeted. And while the word "chick" is the most clicked word in the title, the "2 comments" link was clicked most for some reason.

Interesting stuff.

VideoSift v6 (VS6) Beta Front Page

It's been about 6 months since we launched our VS6 beta single-video page and we've finally now launched our new beta homepage.

As before, logged-in members have the option to disable this new beta version if desired, but we encourage everyone to at least give the new layout a few days of regular use if not to fall in love with it at least to give us some quality, informed feedback.

The new video listing is intended to be much more information dense and feel more community-oriented, and we feel it achieves those goals rather well and is a huge improvement over the VS5 homepage. We also wanted to bring back some of the essence of the much loved very-blue layout of VS4.

Let us know your thoughts below, and as always with changes in software bugs/issues are to be expected so feel free to let us know if anything seems broken.

Little Help Needed from Anyone with an iPhone 5

Do you have an iPhone 5 handy?

I have someone who needs tech support but they are only experiencing their problem in an iPhone 5. Every other device and browser works for her, just not iPhone 5.

I don't have an iPhone 5, so I can't test it out myself, but I'd like to prove one way or the other that the iPhone 5 is broken or that her phone is broken.

If you have an iPhone 5 and are willing to load a simple little web page to see if it works for you, can you please reply here? I'd appreciate it.

Force Your PC to Upgrade to Windows 10 Immediately

Today Windows 10 was released and it's a free upgrade for most modern Windows machines. Microsoft is rolling out the upgrade across the planet in waves, but with the instructions below you can force your PC to upgrade without waiting. It's still at the "Preparing for installation" step on my computer now.

Instructions to Upgrade to Windows 10 Without Waiting in 4 Steps:
  1. Make sure your computer is fully updated using Windows Update - that's how the Get Windows 10 app is installed; you'll see a little white Windows icon in your system tray (by the clock)
  2. Open that Get Windows 10 app and reserve your free copy of Windows 10
  3. Open a cmd.exe window as Administrator (right-click and choose Run as Administrator)
  4. In Windows Update click "Check for updates" and before it's finished checking, quickly go back to the cmd prompt and enter: wuauclt.exe /updatenow
Windows Update will immediately start downloading Windows 10
If that doesn't work, you can just download the Windows 10 installer.

I was getting some error with the Windows Update method, so I opted to just download. I don't know why everyone doesn't just do that to begin with.

In any case, I'm fully upgraded to Windows 10!

So far so good. Not really exploring it because I'm busy working, but I freaking love the virtual desktop feature. Finally I don't have to fill up my task bar with all my many tabs. I now have a different desktop for each different set of apps I'm working on together. This is life-changing for me.
