Enjoying Life One Day at a Time: A Grandma and Her Cat

Misao to Fukumaru (Misao the Big Mama and Fukumaru the Cat), a collection of photographs chronicling the ordinary daily life of an elderly woman and her beloved cat Fukumaru, might seem an unlikely bestseller. But perhaps it is precisely the tranquility of Misao’s peaceful rural life that has appealed to so many busy residents of Japan’s crowded and ultramodern cities...

Quoting a comment with quotes = borked up formatting.

I was just replying to a comment that included quotes which included other quotes, and the formatting went crazy. Normally I delete all but the person I'm responding to, but in this case I wanted to multi-quote my reply to show the context of what I was saying. Text from quotes was appeared in the wrong person's quote boxes. I understand HTML enough to fix it, but it was time consuming and frustrating. Why doesn't VS use BBCode like most forum software?

YouTube Problems Anyone? (videos stopping eary)

For the past several days YouTube videos have been randomly stopping 10-30 seconds before the end of the actual video. By stopping, I mean it hits a spot 10-30 with 10-30 seconds of video left and just jumps to the end. If I drag the slider back to a point just before it stopped, it will stop at that exact point again. I have to find the exact time it stops and drag the slider 1 second past that point to see the end of the video.

I saw Ant's post below about HTML5, but I just checked and it's using flash. I enabled HTML5, so maybe that will fix it maybe it wont. I remember this happening before and I don't remember if I did anything to fix it or if it just went away on its own.

YouTube Slowness?

Is it just me or is YouTube fucking up for anyone else? For about 3 days now, I have been having problems watching videos from YouTube. At first I thought my ISP was having a problems again, but running a speed test shows I'm still getting my full speed, I'm able to watch movies from Netflix in HD and I have no problems with videos from other sites.

It happens when watching embeds here or straight from YouTube. Some videos work fine, for example a 1-3 minute video might begin playing and fully load in seconds while a 30 second clip might play a few seconds and stop to wait for it to buffer. Long videos are more of a problem. They either stop playing a few seconds in and refuse to load more, or stop several minutes in before it decides to quit.

Vimeo embeds slow to load?

Is it just me or are Vimeo embeds slow? This has been going on for days, maybe weeks now. YouTube embeds load fine. I had a bunch of videos loaded in tabs, clicked the play on a 5 minute Vimeo video, it was so slow I let it load while I went to view the other tabs. I watched the videos in the other tabs, and when I got to the last tab, the Vimeo video, maybe half an hour later it was only half way through.

Embed Players not aligned properly?

I have seen more and more of these lately, and they're all from YouTube too. The player is there, but it's not aligned properly or something. The bottom bar with the play/pause button, seek bar and timer and part of the bottom and right side of the video are cut off.

I can click the play button in the center of the video and it plays, but I can't pause. The only way to properly view the video is to watch it on YouTube.

Is it me or is YouTube slow?

For the past two (maybe 3) days, videos from YouTube have been slow to load. Videos from other sites seem fine. I have to hit play, then pause and go do something else while the video loads.

You can vote while not logged in?

Yesterday I was watching videos with my morning bowl of cereal, and I must have cast a half dozen votes or so before I tried to post a comment and realized I wasn't logged in. The sift now lets non users vote? How are those votes counted?

When I logged in, the video I had last voted up and was trying to post a comment, it re-assigned the vote to me, so I hoped it did it for the rest of the videos I voted for.

Apparently it didn't though because one of the videos I know I voted for is on the top 15 today, and it shows like I haven't voted for it. What happened to all of those votes I cast yesterday before logging in?

Paperback or Hardcover

Since there's a discussion on MP3 or CD going on, I might as well ask, if we link to a book that is available in hardcover and paperback, which do we link to?

Are your videos stuttering?

I've been noticing that when playing videos here that they'll stutter every few minutes or every few seconds. All this time I thought it was something wrong with my system, and it was driving me crazy. I just now figured out what is causing it.... more inside ...

What am I doing wrong?

I don't post many videos anymore, because usually when I find something I feel is worthy of the sift I find that it has already been posted. But twice now I've posted a video that didn't get a single vote and expired to my personal queue, then days/weeks later I come to the sift and see someone posted the same video and it's now on the top 15 list after a few hours of being posted, using a nearly identical title and tags as my post.

Why do we have to wait 2 days to fix someone's *dead post?

Can we change the fix dead embed so we don't have to wait 2 days to fix someone's *dead post? Several of my bookmarks have been *deaded which are owned by a non active user and I've found fixes for them, but I can't fix them since it gives the original poster 2 days to fix it. Does it really matter who fixes it?

Vatican Issues Instruction on Bioethics

The Vatican issued its most authoritative and sweeping document on bioethical issues in more than 20 years on Friday, taking into account recent developments in biomedical technology and reinforcing the church’s opposition to in vitro fertilization, human cloning, genetic testing on embryos before implantation and embryonic stem cell research.

The Vatican says these techniques violate the principles that every human life — even an embryo — is sacred, and that babies should be conceived only through intercourse by a married couple.

The 32-page instruction, titled “Dignitas Personae,” or “The Dignity of the Person,” was issued by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the Vatican’s doctrinal office, and carries the approval and the authority of Pope Benedict XVI.

Under discussion for six years, it is a moral response to bioethical questions raised in the 21 years since the congregation last issued instructions.

It bans the morning-after pill, the intrauterine device and the pill RU-486, saying these can result in what amount to abortions.

The Vatican document reiterates that the church is opposed to research on stem cells derived from embryos. But it does not oppose research on stem cells derived from adults; blood from umbilical cords; or fetuses “who have died of natural causes.”

The document does not prohibit the use of vaccines developed using “cell lines of illicit origin” if children’s health is at stake. But it says that “everyone has the duty” to inform health care providers of personal objections to such vaccines.

The church also objects to freezing embryos, arguing that doing so exposes them to potential damage and manipulation, and that it raises the problem of what to do with frozen embryos that are not implanted. There are at least 400,000 of these in the United States alone.

“Our advice is that freezing should not take place,” said Bishop Elio Sgreccia, president emeritus of the Pontifical Academy for Life. “Because once it is done, you’re in a situation where to correct the error implies a further offense. Once you have them, what do you do with them?”

The Vatican’s intended audience is not only individual Roman Catholics, but also non-Catholic doctors, scientists, medical researchers and legislators who might consider regulating stem cell research and other recent developments in biomedical technology.

Suggestion for *dupeof...

When a dupe is posted and someone invokes the *dupeof command, how about having the original video auto promoted?

If I try to submit a video and find that it's already posted, I'll *promote it if I have a point to burn.

Christians accuse Obama Family of Using Witchcraft on McCain

Just when you think people can't get any dumber, now they're accusing Obama's family in Africa of witchcraft and putting curses on McCain.

Block African witchcraft curses against McCain and Palin NOW!
Dear friends:

Minutes ago I spoke with friend Dr. Norman G. Marvin, M.D. and he is so concerned at what he has learned about Barack Obama's family in Kenya that he is calling a special prayer meeting in his home to pray against the witchcraft curses attempted by them against John McCain and Sarah Palin.

Dr. Marvin sent me the below e-mail from Flo Ellers. Flo is credentialed with the International Fellowship of Ministries which is based in Washington State. She is also a member of EndTime Handmaidens and Servants of Jasper, Arkansas.

LittleBigPlanet delayed after Qur’an blunder

LittleBigPlanet delayed after Qur’an blunder
Media Molecule's platformer is delayed in all global territories; new release date yet to be announced

Sony has confirmed that its highly anticipated LittleBigPlanet has been pushed back to an unspecified date, following the discovery of Qur’an expressions in the soundtrack.

The game was due to be released on October 24th in Europe and October 21st in North America, and is tipped to be the PlayStation 3’s biggest Christmas release, having received rave reviews from the specialist press.

A statement from Sony read:

"During the review process prior to the release of LittleBigPlanet, it has been brought to our attention that one of the background music tracks licensed from a record label for use in the game contains two expressions that can be found in the Qur'an. We have taken immediate action to rectify this and we sincerely apologise for any offence that this may have caused."

Charles Darwin to receive apology from the Church of England

Charles Darwin to receive apology from the Church of England for rejecting evolution

The Church of England is to apologise to Charles Darwin for its initial rejection of his theories, nearly 150 years after he published his most famous work.

The Church of England will concede in a statement that it was over-defensive and over-emotional in dismissing Darwin's ideas. It will call "anti-evolutionary fervour" an "indictment" on the Church".

The bold move is certain to dismay sections of the Church that believe in creationism and regard Darwin's views as directly opposed to traditional Christian teaching.

The apology, which has been written by the Rev Dr Malcolm Brown, the Church's director of mission and public affairs, says that Christians, in their response to Darwin's theory of natural selection, repeated the mistakes they made in doubting Galileo's astronomy in the 17th century.

"The statement will read: Charles Darwin: 200 years from your birth, the Church of England owes you an apology for misunderstanding you and, by getting our first reaction wrong, encouraging others to misunderstand you still. We try to practise the old virtues of 'faith seeking understanding' and hope that makes some amends."

Opposition to evolutionary theories is still "a litmus test of faithfulness" for some Christian movements, the Church will admit. It will say that such attitudes owe much to a fear of perceived threats to Christianity.

The comments are included on a Church of England website promoting the views of Charles Darwin to be launched on Monday.
