Pretty impressive climbing. Also, I thought the cop was very professional.

I think it was an accident. He puts on his blinker. Then there is an opening, he guns it. Thinking he is in drive. Poor guy was probably all freaked out, seemed like the cop realized that and was trying to get him to understand it was not a big deal. He was just going to fast.

That is my interpretation of the events.

Good cop, though.

I can't decide if that was intentional or not. My instinct is not.

Good spot on the blinker MycroftHomlz. Looks like an accident.

I think he unintentionally reversed and then ended up in some weird position inside the car where he couldn`t get his foot off the gas. My new policy of late is to stay at least 10 feet away from any running vehicle unless I`m getting in or out of it.

No, that had to be intentional. "drive" is two gears away from "reverse" and he never took his foot off the gas. It would take a lot of power to put the car up like that. He had to have floored it. Hell, the blinker may have been accidental.

I'm surprised at how easy it was for the idiot's car to climb like this...

had to be accidental. no idiot would have kept it floored for 20 seconds, and you can clearly hear the engine "bouncing" off it's rev-limit.

It's hard to believe someone would do something like this intentionally, though it does seem to look suspicious. Still, MG, have you never had one of those automatics with the crappy shifters that appears to be in drive but is still in neutral? I have. In plenty of automatic cars. And to think it's outside the realm of possibility that maybe, just maybe, if an automatic gear shift can appear to be in drive and still be in neutral, then maybe, just maybe, it can also be mistakenly placed in reverse instead of drive if the driver is incredibly agitated or nervous.

Keep an open mind, copper.

+1 for "not intentional" here... He was probably just nervous and messed up.

An automatic looks like this:

P
R
N
D
1
2

The old guy wanted to gun it away from the cop in defiance. He was too excited and slammed his foot down while the shifter column was passing from reverse into neutral, on its way down to drive. He was probably not in a comfortable forward-facing position when this motion started. I would guess he was partially twisted backwards to sneer or flip off the police officer. Even just looking backwards in the rearview mirror when unexpectedly reversing could cause enough disorientation that he'd collide with the cop car.

If your car suddenly goes backwards and ass-up, your weight is pushed forwards. The sudden reverse movement, followed by the downwards position, probably resulted in the guy actually standing on the gas pedal to support his weight. In the moments after the collision he was probably so bewildered and panicked that he just didn't think to take his foot off the gas.

I was once in a car that was hit by someone who accidentally reversed in an automatic. They had parked it waiting for a red light. When it turned green they got flustered and put it into reverse by mistake.

Accidental or not, I gotta agree that cop deserves a pat on the back for self control throughout.
