Some Long Overdue Fixes

Two oustanding issues are finally fixed! Both of them are related to SSL, though in different ways.

Internal VideoSift Widget Embeds

Our own embeds in comments on the site have been broken since we enabled SSL because the old widgets had insecure URLs hard-coded and insecure scripts cannot be loaded on a secure page. Those issues are fixed. For example:

Bookmarklet

The Bookmarklet (that allows you to post videos by clicking a button in your bookmark bar) never worked when you were looking at a video on a secure video host URL (e.g., YouTube) because VS was not secure, so for the same reason listed above, our insecure bookmarklet script just wouldn't load.

Now that we support SSL, I've updated the bookmarklet to use only secure URLs so it will now work from a video host using SSL or not.

Enjoy!

Can we clean these comments out somehow? (Wtf Talk)

So apparently a long term account was hacked or something and has been posting huge lorem ipsum comments on many videos. The account appears to be banned now, but how can we clear out the posts? They are lagging out the comments section from loading.

*Ban and *Spammer Guidelines

Like everyone who's been a Sifter for a while (or even 11 years, like some of us!), one of the things we appreciate most is that the community takes care of the community, including welcoming new members and more often telling likely spammers and abusers to take a hike.

The two most frequent practices used in dealing with potential baddies is the *ban invocation and the *spammer invocation. These are very powerful invocations and must be used with great responsibility. Until now, their use has gone mostly unchecked, taking every invocation in good faith.

Have I been Trumped by Google?

Posting a video to the SIFT has been impossible for me over the past 22 hours or so. First weird thing was I was logged off when I clicked on the site [I'm NEVER logged out]. Then, after attempting to submit a YT video as I usually do, I got the following error message:

********************************
This page isn’t working

Chrome detected unusual code on this page and blocked it to protect your personal information (for example, passwords, phone numbers, and credit cards).
Try visiting the site's homepage.
ERR_BLOCKED_BY_XSS_AUDITOR

*********************************

I deleted my cookies and browsing history after logging out of the site. I restarted my computer and logged in again ... Now it appears that I can't post anything at all. I've tried to put up 2 other YT vids and, after verifying the embed code and filling in the form, I get the same error message when I hit submit. It doesn't appear that I'm restricted in any other way here. I haven't had any recent google updates and the site was working fine for me several hours before all of this started happening.

WTF is happening? Anyone else having issues? ... Bueller? @dag @lucky760

"ALL YOUR BROWSING HISTORY ARE BELONG TO ME"

That's the song your ISP will be singing once Trump signs off on a bill to end privacy in the United States where much of the world's internet infrastructure already lives.

Last week, a thread posting this image of a NYT full page ad warning of the dangers of the loss of internet privacy became one of the most upvoted reddit posts of all time.

Since then, the bill has passed from Senate onto Congress, where it was again passed.

This move seems to be in line with AT&T wanting to charge almost $400/y to customers who did not want their browser history sold to anyone willing to buy it.

Either way, you should know that your privacy is being sold out. So either make some noise to convince the American President to veto the law, or start shopping for a VPN, for as long as that remains helpful.

Sharing on Social Media

Is it possible to share a post on Facebook without it randomly selecting an image from some other video on the Sift for the preview image?

Because that's exactly what happens to me, no matter how I go about trying to share from here to Facebook: random image, every time.

Example: https://www.screencast.com/t/dfJM7tH4i

It makes sharing any VideoSift content basically impossible.
